The purpose of this transfer format is to provide an exact and common format for the MORGAM Participating Centre (MPC) to transfer annual population mortality data to the MORGAM Data Centre (MDC). The data should be provided for each relevant sex in each Reporting Unit for every calendar year of the MORGAM follow-up period.

Format specification

Columns of the format specification

ITEM NAME

name used for the item in the MDC.

SPECIFICATION AND CODES

specification and values of the variable. More details can be found in the section "Definitions of the variables" below, or by following the hyperlink in column ITEM NAME.

FORMAT OR VALUE

specifies the format in which the value should be presented in the transfer data set. In the cases where the value of the variable is fixed, the value is also given in this column.

Instructions for making corrections to data that have already been sent to the MDC are given in Section Data communication between the MPCs and the MDC.

Please contact the MDC for instructions if you cannot provide information as specified in this document or if you have any problems with the interpretation of the coding for any specific items.

Data transfer procedures

The data should be prepared in ASCII comma-delimited format using semicolon (;) as delimiter, with the names of the variables in the first row. If the value of a variable includes the delimiter inside the text then the value should be surrounded by double quotes ("). A dot (.) should be used as a decimal point. Here is an example of a ASCII comma-delimited data file of Form 12:

To avoid errors in naming the variables, copy and paste the first row from the example above.

To simplify the tracing of data transfers between the MPC and the MDC, the files should be named as follows:

F12_MPCxx_YYYYMMDD_N.CSV, where:

• F12 - indicates that the data are for Form 12
• MPCxx -xx is MPC code
• YYYYMMDD - the year, month and date when this file was created (e.g. 20051128)
• N - sequence number of the transfer from the MPC. The number is generated by the MPC, and should also be used for logging the data transfers locally.

The data files should be sent by e-mail message to MDC (Ari Haukijarvi (firstname.lastname@thl.fi)). In MDC the data will be checked for consistency and quality, and after any problems have been resolved, they will be entered into the MORGAM database and acknowledgement will be sent to the MPC.

Specific instructions for each item

Follow these instructions carefully when creating a computer file.

Number 12 indicates the "Data transfer format: annual population mortality data".

Version number of this form.

Calendar year for which information was provided.

Sex for which the information was provided.

Code for the ICD category for which the data were provided. The codes and the corresponding ICD-categories are:
