Definition of the cohortTarget populationThe Northern Sweden Epic Study: The cohort consists of individuals 30, 40, 50 and 60 years of age, both men and women. The Northern Sweden Epic Study is a part of the Northern Sweden Health and Disease Study (NSHDS), ongoing from 1985. The Epic Elderly Study: The cohort consists of the older individuals of the Northern Sweden EPIC cohort from 60 and above. The Epic elderly is a subset of the Northern Sweden Epic study. Se descriptions below. RecruitmentVolunteers from a target population that covers the whole province of Västerbotten (North of Sweden). Years of recruitment1992-1996 Size of the cohortThe Northern Sweden Epic Study: 25 725 individuals. The Epic Elderly Study: 3 364 subjects RecontactsPeriodThe Northern Sweden Epic Study: Every 10th years The Epic Elderly Study: Recontact is on a planning stage (Northpop project) ApproachThe Northern Sweden Epic Study: "Invitation to a re-examination", 2002-2006. Data collection accomplished by means of questionnaires combined with an interview. The response rate is approx. 60%. The Epic Elderly Study: Examination and data collection as above combined with matching genealogical data (from church records). Web-based questionnaires will focus on estimating changes over time in lifestyle factors such as physical activity, emotional stress, socio-economical conditions and diet, which all are expected to influence progression of Neurodegenerative diseases, Osteoarthritis, Cardiovascular disease and some cancers. There will also be specific genealogical questions concerning occurrence of obesity and fractures and different tests of Cognitive impairment. Measurements at the baseline are the same in the cohorts. Recontact 1 is only for The Northern Sweden Epic Study. Future recontactsThe Northern Sweden Epic Study: Follow-up of study participants are on-going at regular intervals (every 10 years) from the year of 1992. The Epic Elderly Study: Recontacts is in a planning stage (Northpop 70). Other follow-upFollow-up is ongoing using record linkage with registry data on all major disease areas. Reported diagnoses of interest are further ascertained and information is supplemented by the use of specific registries and the use of medical records in hospitals and clinics whenever needed to get additional clinical information. Follow-up periodEvery 10 years from the baseline examination.
