Definition of the cohort

Target population

The Northern Sweden Epic Study: The cohort consists of individuals 30, 40, 50 and 60 years of age, both men and women. The Northern Sweden Epic Study is a part of the Northern Sweden Health and Disease Study (NSHDS), ongoing from 1985.

The Epic Elderly Study: The cohort consists of the older individuals of the Northern Sweden EPIC cohort from 60 and above. The Epic elderly is a subset of the Northern Sweden Epic study. Se descriptions below.

Recruitment

Volunteers from a target population that covers the whole province of Västerbotten (North of Sweden).

Years of recruitment

1992-1996

Size of the cohort

The Northern Sweden Epic Study: 25 725 individuals.

The Epic Elderly Study: 3 364 subjects

Recontacts

Period

The Northern Sweden Epic Study: Every 10th years

The Epic Elderly Study: Recontact is on a planning stage (Northpop project)

Approach

The Northern Sweden Epic Study: "Invitation to a re-examination", 2002-2006. Data collection accomplished by means of questionnaires combined with an interview. The response rate is approx. 60%.

The Epic Elderly Study: Examination and data collection as above  combined with matching genealogical data (from church records). Web-based questionnaires will focus on estimating changes over time in lifestyle factors such as physical activity, emotional stress, socio-economical conditions and diet, which all are expected to influence progression of Neurodegenerative diseases, Osteoarthritis, Cardiovascular disease and some cancers. There will also be specific genealogical questions concerning occurrence of obesity and fractures and different tests of Cognitive impairment.

Measurements at the baseline are the same in the cohorts. Recontact 1 is only for The Northern Sweden Epic Study. Recontacts are in a planning stage for The Epic Elderly Study

Future recontacts

The Northern Sweden Epic Study:  Follow-up of study participants are on-going at regular intervals (every 10 years) from the year of 1992.

The Epic Elderly Study: Recontacts is in a planning stage (Northpop 70).

Other follow-up

Follow-up is ongoing using record linkage with registry data on all major disease areas. Reported diagnoses of interest are further ascertained and information is supplemented by the use of specific registries and the use of medical records in hospitals and clinics whenever needed to get additional clinical information.

Follow-up period

Every 10 years from the baseline examination.

Sources of data

Death certificates obtained from regional and national health and death registries

Regional computerized hospital discharge register

Medical records of patients

Data from re-examination

Re-contact questionnaire.

Follow-up procedure

Record linkage to the national Causes of Death Register, using the unique personal identification number.

End-points covered through the follow-up

  • Non-fatal cancers: Yes
    • Cancer survival: Yes
  • Non-fatal acute coronary events: Yes

  • Non-fatal diabetes: Yes
  • Fractures: Yes
  • Cognitive impairment/dementia:Yes
