CINDI (Countrywide Integrated Noncommunicable Diseases Intervention) is a major, WHO coordinated, international collaborative activity for theory-based, practical nation-wide intervention. The Programme aims at preventing major non- communicable diseases and promoting the health of populations in the Member countries through integrated, innovative activities. Comprehensive action is based upon sound theories and policy frameworks, involvement of health services and intersectoral collaboration. Practical information systems, sound evaluation and exchange of international experience are important facets of the CINDI approach.
At present 33 countries participate in the CINDI network, which is coordinated by the WHO Regional Office for Europe in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Council of Programme Directors meets annually to discuss progress achieved and outline priorities for action. The CINDI programme has had considerable success in a number of countries (e.g. Finland, Lithuania, Russia and Canada) and has actively contributed to efforts of closing the east-west health gap in Europe.
