Turku European Capital of Culture: KUVA project

Visit to the Kaskenlinna Hospital (214 hospital beds/patients) which of two departments/wards for elderly people are pilot sites for KUVA – Culture Plans for Senior Citizens project. The KUVA project is part of the official program of the Turku 2011 European Capital of Culture.

In the KUVA project the Turku Municipal Social Services and Health Care Department will introduce a cultural plan that forms part of the more comprehensive treatment plan for the elderly in round-the-clock nursing institutions. The goal is to organize versatile set of cultural activities according to individual needs and wishes. Art, music, dance, poetry, theatre etc will be elemets of individual cultur plan. After a pilot introduction, the cultural plan will be included in the treatment plans of other health care units, so that culture will eventually become a daily part of the lives and treatment of approximately 1,500 elderly residents of Turku.

A visit is being arranged to the City of Turku’s Health  promotion unit, which gives expertise and development support to all the units in municipal social welfare and health care services, to other sectors in the municipal administration, and to NGOs in the city. The unit supports the development of an emphasis on health promotion in health care services. The unit’s staff consists  of two dieticians,  household adviser, physical education adviser, health promotion coordinator, health promotion planner, health promotion adviser, a planning officer for substance abuse prevention, and specialist in sexual health.

Folkhälsan: Quartier club ‘Kvartersklubben’

A visit is being arranged to the Swedish activity center ‘Kvartersklubben’ (quartier club). Folkhälsan provides morning activities for families and afternoon activities for the elderly. Kvartersklubben has almost 10, 000 visitors in eight physical and 20 social activity groups a year. Folkhälsan organizes for example music playschool for kids, senior dances, discussion groups as well as bingo and bridge. There also exists a family centre and café.

The Mannerheim League for Child Welfare: Perhetalo Heideken

A visit is being arranged to Perhetalo Heideken, a skills and expertise centre that focuses on preventive child welfare work and gathers together NGO expertise in the field. Heideken also operates as a centre for volunteer work, bringing together volunteers working with children, young people and families. Heideken offers a great variety of services for children, young people and families. Its operations include support persons, case management, advisory services, the Marakatti family centre and a variety of events.
