In 2011, the National Institute for Health and Welfare fostered 45 doctoral dissertations. This is a record number in THL's short history.
Most of the dissertations dealt with medicine and its sub-topics. The researched topic areas included disease genotypes related to national diseases, microbiology, and behavioral medicine. Of the theses, 26 were published in THL's publication series, while more than half were defended at the University of Helsinki. Debaters have either worked in THL or the dissertations were written under the guidance of THL staff.
"The record number is a demonstration of good cooperation with the universities, and the fact that young scientists are successfully being recruited to THL's strategic priority areas," says Director General Pekka Puska. "The dissertations are usually based on national data collected by our institution, and their analyzes benefits the health and wellbeing of the Finnish population."
